2564th Buddha Jayanti Observed in Edmonton, Canada

The Nepalese community in Edmonton, Canada observed 2564th Buddha Jayanti amidst a special culture event virtually on May 10, 2020. The cultural event was organized by Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA), a local organization to practice, promote and preserve Newa culture and traditions in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The cultural event was inaugurated by Dr. Hemanta Joshi, President of NCSA, by lighting Twadewas, Nepalese traditional artistic oil lamps. After the inauguration, Mrs. Bejuna Joshi performed Buddha Puja and offered Prayer to Lord Buddha. Dr. Joshi offered Khata to Lord Buddha. Mr. Season Shrestha, President of World Newah Organization (WNO), USA was the chief guest of the cultural event. He joined the cultural event virtually from USA.

In his brief welcome speech, Dr. Hemanta Joshi said that NCSA started the tradition of observing Buddha Jayanti as an annual cultural event in the Nepalese community in Edmonton. Because of Covid-19 Pandemic, NCSA decided to organize the 2564th Buddha Jayanti cultural event virtually through internet. Mr. SeasonN Shrestha, President of WNO, spoke about Buddha’s life and teachings. He praised the activities of NCSA in preserving and promoting ewa culture and traditions in Canada. He also thanked the NCSA Team in organizing the 2564th Buddha Jayanti virtually through the use of social media despite Covid-19 Pandemic. Mr. Tri Prasad Dhoubhadel, Vice President of NCSA, shared a short story related to Buddha’s teaching.

In the cultural event, participants were entertained with video clip related past Buddha Jayanti cultural events of NCSA, live poems, Gyanmala Bhajans, spiritual songs, and melody related to Buddha virtually through internet and Webex APP. At the end of the cultural event, Mr. Birendra Kayastha, Secretary of NCSA, thanked all the guests and participants for their cooperation in successfully organizing the cultural event. Mr. Dhruba Shrestha, Executive Member of NCSA was the host of the cultural event.
