The Nepalese community in Edmonton,Canada observed Gun Punhi (also known as Kwati Punhi) and Yenya Punhi (also known as Indra Jatra) festivals amidst a special cultural event virtually via Webex on Sunday September 19, 2021.The virtual cultural event was hosted by Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA), a local Nepalese-Canadian organization to practice, promote and preserve Newa culture and traditions in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada.
The Gun Punhi and Yenya Punhi cultural event was inaugurated by Dr.Hemanta Joshi,President of NCSA.In the beginning,Dr.Joshi welcomed all the guests,community members and other viewers in the virtual cultural event.According to Dr.Joshi,NCSA has been organizing in various cultural events and activities in the community annually since 2013 to practice, promote and preserve Newa language, culture and traditions.Dr.Joshi also briefly highlighted on the importance of Gun Punhi and Yenya Punhi cultural event. Meanwhile,because of COVID-19 pandemic,NCSA has been hosting its annual cultural events virtually via Webex to keep the culture and traditions alive in the community.This was the second virtual cultural event of NCSA to celebrate Gun Punhi and Yenya Punhi in Edmonton.
In the Gun Punhi and Yenya Punhi cultural event,a video clip on Puja ceremony performed at 2019 Gun Punhi and Yenya Punhi cultural event of NCSA was webcast as an example of worship of deities as it was not possible in the current cultural event due to COVID-19 pandemic.Guests,community members and viewers were also entertained with Youtube video clips on Kumari Charya dance, Lakhey mask dance,Pulukishi dance, and a song related to Indra Jatra.Guests, community members and viewers were also entertained with melodious Basuri dhoons prepared by the local artists for the current cultural event.The cultural event was virtually conducted by Mr.Ratna Shrestha and Mrs.Sunita Pradhan, Executive member of NCSA.
