The Nepalese community in Edmonton,Canada observed Fagu Punhi and fourth World Newah Day amidst a cultural event on Saturday March 27, 2021.The cultural event was hosted virtually by the Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA),a local organization to practice,promote and preserve Newa culture and traditions in Edmonton,Canada.
The cultural event was inaugurated by Dr. Hemanta Joshi, President of NCSA,by lighting twadewas,traditional artistic oil lamps. Welcoming the participants it the virtual cultural event,Dr.Joshi briefly spoke about importance of Fagu Punhi.Dr. Joshi also briefly talked about the World Newah Organization (WNO) and its decision in 2018 to designate last Saturday of March as World Newah Day to celebrate and showcase Newa culture,traditions and pride in the world.Dr. Joshi also highlighted on status of Newa language, literature,arts,culture,and traditions and urged participants to be proud of being Newa.Dr.Joshi urged participants to acknowledge contributions made by the ancestors in the field of language,literature,arts,culture and traditions and contribute in promoting and preserving Newa cultural heritage for the current and future generations.Mr. Tri Prasad Dhoubhadel,Vice President of NCSA, briefly shared recent news about 4th World Newa Day celebration in Kathmandu.Mr.Dwarika Nath Shrestha,senior member of the community,briefly spoke about tradition of celebrating Fagu Punhi in Kathmandu,Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.Dr. Keshab Shrestha, founding Vice President of NCSA and Cultural Coordinator,thanked all the participants and EC members for their cooperation and contributions in successfully conducting the cultural event despite Covid-19 pandemic.
In the cultural event,participants were entertained with video clips related to Fagu Punhi and Newa culture and traditions collected from YouTube posts and NCSA artists via Webex.The cultural event was virtually conducted by Mr. Mahesh Maharjan, member of NCSA.
