On behalf of the Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA), we would like to express our heartfelt and deepest condolences on the recent passing of Dr. Kedar Nath Shrestha on August 23, 2020, at age of 71 years old. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time.
Dr. Kedar Nath Shrestha was born on November 26th, 1948, in Biratnagar, Nepal. In 1969, he attended the University of West Georgia for his undergraduate studies. He then went on to complete his Ph.D. in Microbiology at Auburn University, Alabama by late 1970’s. After briefly returning to Nepal and moving to Chicago IL, he eventually settled in Birmingham, AL by mid 1980’s where he raised his family and worked at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for over 30 years.
Along with Dr. Kedar Nath Shrestha’s wife Rose Shrestha, he is survived by his daughter, Sylvia Benefiel and her husband Caleb, his son, Kevin Shrestha and his wife Aditi, and his grandson Liam Benefiel. His family was his biggest priority and proudest achievement. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and a loving husband.
Dr. Kedar Nath Shrestha was a gentle, quiet, and kind person who was always happy, smiling, and willing to help. He loved his family, cared about his friends, and the community. He was deeply involved in local and regional Nepali communities. He was the pioneer of the Nepali community in Birmingham, Alabama. He was well known as “Mama” (uncle from mother side in Nepali). He was always there to help anyone in need. Over the years, he served in our Nepali community, locally and regionally, as a Chairperson for the Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA) convention in 2003 in Birmingham, as Vice President of NASeA, advisor of Alabama Nepalese Association (ALNA), and UAB Student organization, mentor, and more. His presence will be missed not only by his family, but also by our Nepali community. For sure, Dr. Shrestha’s legacy will continue in the years to come in Southeastern America and beyond.
Even though he is gone from this world, Dr. Kedar Nath Shrestha will always be remembered for his service, dedication, kindness, caring, and love.
May his departed soul rest in eternal peace!
Thank you
Sincerely,
Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA)
