The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has entered its fourth day, with the Associated Press reporting 34 fatalities and over 168,000 people displaced so far. However, a diplomatic intervention by US President Donald Trump has prompted both nations to prepare for negotiations.

On Saturday, President Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he had spoken with both Thai and Cambodian leaders, warning them of potential trade agreement halts if the conflict didn’t cease. Following this, both countries agreed to engage in ceasefire talks.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called the decision positive for his soldiers and people. He instructed Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to coordinate with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to implement the ceasefire.

Thai acting Prime Minister Poomtham Wechayachai also thanked Trump, expressing his principal agreement. He emphasized the need for direct talks between the two countries to begin swiftly.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, clashes continued along the border on Sunday. Both sides have blamed each other for shelling and military activity.

Both nations have recalled their ambassadors, and Thailand has closed border crossings.
