Albany, NY — New York State Assemblymember Steven Raga is proud to announce and host the 2nd Annual Nepali Community Day in Albany on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the New York State Capitol, 172 State Street, Albany, NY 12224. The event is co-
sponsored by Deputy Senate Majority Leader Michael Gianaris and Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha, and will serve as a key platform for advocacy and engagement between the Nepali American community and New York State policymakers.
This year’s Nepali Community Day in Albany will feature Senate and Assembly introductions in the legislative chambers, alongside structured meeting with elected officials and state leaders to discuss legislative priorities, programmatic needs, and funding opportunities affecting the Nepali American community across New York State.
Key topics of discussion include:
Legislation
Support for New York State Senate Bill S1865, advocating for the recognition
and funding of Nepali media.
Support for the Ethnic and Community Media Bill (Assembly Bill A3412), which
seeks to increase access to public advertising and resources for multilingual and
community-based media outlets serving immigrant and ethnic populations.
Funding
Funding for Nepali language classes and Nepali community organizations.
Increased investment in mental health services, community centers, and
preservation efforts for cultural identity.
Programmatic Priorities
Expansion of healthcare coverage and mental health awareness initiatives.
Promotion of Nepali culture through Department of Cultural Affairs partnerships
Immigration-focused policies, including protections for immigrants in NYS,
addressing negative impacts
Addressing hate crimes, improving community safety, and supporting Nepalese
American businesses.
