The United Nations General Assembly has declared December 21 as “World Meditation Day.” Swami Anand Arun of Osho Tapoban, Nepal, played a significant role in this. While traveling worldwide, he consistently advocated for the day to be observed on Buddha Jayanti. During his visits to various countries, he met with local, central, and state-level leaders, urging them to support this cause and inspiring action on the matter.
Ultimately, although the declaration could not be made on Buddha Jayanti, the announcement of December 21 as “World Meditation Day” became an important decision.
The United Nations General Assembly passed a proposal unanimously to declare December 21 as World Meditation Day. India co-sponsored the draft resolution at the UN General Assembly, which was unanimously accepted to designate December 21 as World Meditation Day.
On Friday, during the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, the proposal for “World Meditation Day” was unanimously passed. The core group of countries that led the initiative included Nepal, India, Liechtenstein, Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Andorra.

The Assembly declared December 21 as World Meditation Day to raise awareness about the benefits of meditation and remind everyone of their right to achieve the highest possible level of physical and mental health.
Additionally, the Assembly recognized the relationship between yoga and meditation as a complementary approach to health and well-being.
It is worth noting that in February 16, 2019, during a visit to Virginia, United States, Swami Anand Arun of Osho Tapoban, Nepal, led the campaign for an annual International Meditation Day. The Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill to officially observe the day every year.
