Haymarket, VA – In a groundbreaking event, the first-ever Kukur Tihar USA festival made its vibrant debut on October 27, bringing together over 200 participants and 50 dogs from across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas, as well as a few international guests from Nepal. Hosted by Kukur Tihar USA, the event celebrated Nepal’s unique cultural tradition of honoring dogs, transforming Haymarket into a colorful hub of love, loyalty, and cultural pride.

A Festival Rooted in Tradition Kukur Tihar, deeply embedded in Nepali culture, celebrates the bond between humans and dogs, recognizing them as loyal companions and divine messengers in the Hindu tradition.Jewan Tiwari (Jack Tiwari) , the main organizer of the event, spoke passionately about the purpose of this festival. “In Nepal, it’s believed that dogs play a sacred role as protectors and companions, even guiding souls to the afterlife. This festival honors them in the most heartfelt way. Bringing this tradition here is about sharing our culture, connecting with people, and celebrating dogs in a way that brings us all together.”

A Day of Celebration, Culture, and Love The event was marked by a series of activities, from a red carpet walk for the dogs to traditional Nepali ceremonies where each dog received a tika (ceremonial mark) and a beautiful marigold-style garland. Attendees were moved by the sight of proud dog owners participating in this cultural homage, giving their pets treats and enjoying the Nepali cuisine. The crowd included individuals from diverse communities—Nepali, Indians, South Asians, Native American, Europe, South America, the Middle East, African American, and Caribbean backgrounds—demonstrating the universal bond of love and respect for pets.

Looking to the Future In a powerful inaugural speech, Tiwari invited attendees to envision Kukur Tihar as an annual event that would become as beloved as Christmas or Diwali—specifically dedicated to honoring dogs. He proposed that the last Sunday in October be set aside annually as Kukur Tihar Day in the U.S., welcoming all dog lovers to participate in this celebration. “Today, you all are the founding friends of Kukur Tihar in the United States,” he said, “and one day, who knows, we may even see a Kukur Tihar museum that marks this day as a historic beginning.”

Kukur Tihar USA’s first event established a new tradition in the U.S., one that beautifully merges Nepali culture with America’s enduring love for dogs. As Tiwari expressed, “This festival is more than a celebration; it’s a reminder to love, respect, and cherish our pets who offer us unwavering loyalty.”

Mark Your Calendars for Next Year: The last Sunday in October 2025 will continue this heartwarming celebration, expanding the Kukur Tihar USA tradition for future generations.
