Annual Losar Celebration Draws Crowds in Queens, New York

Woodside, Queens – On February 17, 2024, the Tibetan Community Hall in Woodside, Queens, was alive with vibrant colors and jubilant spirits as the United Sherpa Association hosted its annual Losar party. Welcoming Sherpa community members and supporters from near and far, the event showcased a blend of formal proceedings and rich cultural performances.

The program, meticulously organized by the United Sherpa Association, unfolded in two parts: a formal segment and a cultural extravaganza. General Secretary Sang Dorje Sherpa guided the formal proceedings, while Pasang Saldon Sherpa led the cultural festivities. The venue was packed to capacity, reflecting the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the attendees.

Opening the formal segment, Vice President Sangbu Sherpa delivered a warm welcome speech, expressing gratitude to all participants. President Temba Sherpa extended heartfelt thanks, setting the tone for an evening of celebration and appreciation. The ceremonial lighting of butter lamps, symbolizing auspicious beginnings, was conducted by Venerable Urgen Tulku, Chief Guest Mr. Sonam Gyaljen Sherpa, President Temba Sherpa, and Chair of the Board of Trustees Mr. Lhakpa Rinji Sherpa. The ambiance resonated with the melodies of both the Nepali and US national anthems, echoing the Sherpa community’s dual heritage.

Acknowledging the contributions of outstanding individuals, the Executive Committee President and the Board of Trustees Chair honored recipients for their dedicated service to the association. Additionally, winners of the Sybru dance competition were recognized for their achievements, further fostering a sense of pride and unity within the community.

Dignitaries and representatives from various organizations, former presidents and former board of trustee chairs of the United Sherpa Association graced the occasion, including notable figures from the NYC Mayor’s Office and elected officials. Assembly Member Steven Raga of the 30th District commended the United Sherpa Association, pledging to commemorate Losar statewide through legislative measures in Albany, underscoring the event’s significance beyond the local community.

Highlighting the cultural segment were mesmerizing performances of mixed ethnic dances from Nepal, choreographed by the talented Mr. Vijay Nakarmi. Local artists such as Sanu Sherpa, Wangdi Sherpa, James Comklin, and Pasang Dolma Sherpa, along with renowned Nepali national artist Shiva Pariyar, captivated the audience with their spellbinding acts.

Of particular note were the traditional dances by artists from the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu province and Ramechhap Kyidug, showcasing the rich tapestry of Sherpa culture and heritage. The youthful exuberance of children artists added an endearing touch to the evening’s festivities, leaving an indelible impression on all present.

As the night drew to a close, attendees reveled in the infectious beats of the DJ program, dancing and celebrating the spirit of Losar late into the evening. With hearts full of joy and memories to cherish, the annual Sherpa Losar party in Queens, New York, once again reaffirmed the strength of community bonds and cultural pride.
