Children Book Donation Campaign – Nepal

Year 2020 was a difficult year for everyone. We do not believe that there is anyone who is not touched or affected by the pandemic in one way or the other. While most of us are hit by different types of crisis depending on where you are and what age group you fall into, children have been hit with multiple and often different type of crisis. Not only are children physically inactive since they cannot go out and play freely as they used to, they are also mentally affected by what they have seen or heard and do not necessarily fully understand. Among others, education has been greatly hampered.Unable to go to school and get education for most of the academic year, they have been

robbed of their basic right to learn.

While schools have been trying hard to fill the gap by offering online classes where they can, it has not been successful in most communities due to lack of infrastructure, teacher training and community and government support. This is not because of anyone fault (whether it be children, parents, school, teachers, communities or government) or short sightedness but rather due to unusual circumstances that we all are going through Parents and other family members can only offer so much to their children when it comes to formal education. This is especially true where technology is not available, is expensive when available or parent themselves are not educated enough to teach their kids.

We are all struggling and trying to make sense of what happened throughout last one year. We are struggling to explain to our own children how to deal with this new reality. How to learn and how to play with others (which hardly is an option outside of virtual connection in most places).

While struggling to teach our own children and trying to have them focus away from screen (TV, phone and game consoles) we came up with an idea of helping other children going through rougher times than ours. It is a simple idea that does not cost much but the potential impact could be huge if enough of us do it. Impact could be even higher if we come up with a way to improve on our idea or come up with a better ones based on your experience or ground reality in your area. After few months of discussion we are turning our idea into a campaign and we hope to have you on board. Here is what we are trying to do and requesting you to join us in this journey if you wish to. You can also start your own campaign, make it better or help the people in need in your own way in your
own terms.

Buy book/books and donate to anyone you wish to in the first two weeks of February 2021While we are personally targeting children of age group 6 to 14 years old you are free to donate to anyone. We just request that you buy an appropriate book for the age group that you are donating to and do it during first two weeks of February 2021, if you can. Here are some of our personal thought/criteria/goals.However, you are free to deviate from this and start your own.

1. The book donation time – Monday February 1st through Monday February 15th 2021
2. Buy at least two books one for your children or relatives and one for someone else who is not
associated with you. While we are aiming to donate to children you can donate to anyone you
wish to.
3. Reach out to us, or book stores in our list or others (who can act on your behalf) if you are
unable to purchase or donate the books or would like to support with your time or money
4. You can also donate money for the purpose. However, we recommend that you do so by directly
sending the money to trusted individuals or reach out to us for alternatives
5. Donate as many books as possible. Our personal goal is 1000 books.
6. Buy books that promotes multiple language when possible. We are aiming to buy story books
that are in Nepali with English translation.
7. Buy age appropriate books. We prefer the book/books be new since we are donating to others.
8. Donate to individuals randomly, or donate to schools (make sure the school provides the books
to the students). You can also give us the books and we will donate appropriately on your
behalf.
9. Advertise the campaign wherever you can – social media, TV, newspaper and other digital and
physical platforms. Request your friends and/or reach out to people with large audience or
followers.
10. You can write a short note, a word of wisdom or your best wishes to the receiver of the book.
11. Let the receiver of the book know that they can pass the book to their friends once they finish
reading it or keep it to themselves if they enjoy it.

Note: We do not have a registered organization and are also not directly affiliated with any organization for this campaign. Neither are we advertising this on behalf of any person, institution or business. We are simply converting an idea into a campaign to help spread knowledge. Our ultimate goal is to give children a little joy and encourage reading and hope they learn something new while doing so.
