Background:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a designation afforded to immigrants from countries experiencing humanitarian crises such as violent conflict, environmental disasters, or epidemics that would prevent them from returning safely. The majority of TPS recipients have lived in the United States for decades, building lives, careers, and families in New York. Despite the benefits and necessity of the program, the Trump administration, in an effort to advance its anti-immigrant agenda, began efforts to end the program in early 2018, resulting in the Ramos vs. Nielsen case. Yesterday’s decision also has ramifications for the Bhattarai vs. Nielsen case, which impacts Nepali and Honduran TPS holders.

The press conference is hosted by a number of organizations representing TPS communities and supporters including: the National TPS Alliance, African Communities Together, Adhikaar, Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees, Make the Road NY, the New York Immigration Coalition, and 1199SEIU.
