Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra, Biskha Jatra and World Newah Day Observed in Canada

The Nepalese community in Edmonton, Canada recently observed Pahachare, Janbahadyah (Seto Machindra Nath) Jatra, Biskha (Bisket) Jatra and World Newah Day amidst a cultural event at Lansdowne Community Hall on Saturday March 30, 2019. The cultural event was organized by the Newa Cultural Society of Alberta (NCSA), a local organization to practice, promote and preserve Newa culture and traditions in Edmonton, Canada.

The cultural event was inaugurated by Dr. Hemanta Joshi, President of the NCSA. In the inauguration ceremony, deities such as Mahadev, Ajimas, Seto Machindra Nath, Bhairab, Bhadrakali, and Ganesh were worshipped to commemorate Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biskha Jatra cultural festivals.

Welcoming the guests and participants at the cultural event, Dr. Hemanta Joshi, President of NCSA, briefly highlighted on Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biskha Jatra cultural festivals. Dr. Joshi talked about the World Newah Organization and its decision to designate last Saturday of March every year as World Newah Day to celebrate and showcase Newa cultural heritage all over the world. Dr. Joshi also urged participants to be proud of being Newa and contribute in promoting and preserving unique Newa language, culture and traditions for the current and future generations. Mr. Rabindra Shrestha, active member of NCSA, delivered a speech on Biskha Jatra cultural festival. Mr. Dwarika Nath Shrestha, senior member of the community, spoke about different aspects of Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra and Biskha Jatra cultural festivals. In the cultural event, Dr. Keshab Shrestha, ex-Vice President of NCSA; and Mr. Dhruba Shrestha, member of the community, also presented their views on Newa culture and World Newah Day.

In the cultural event, participants were entertained with a Newa song and cultural quizzes related to Pahachare, Janbahadyah Jatra, and Biskha Jatra festivals. They were also served with delicious Samay Bajee (an ethnic feast) as divine blessings.
