First ever a group of 48 Nepalese runners completed Iowa’s Distance Classic run (37th Annual Dam to Dam race)  on June 4th 2016. There were 28 Half Marathon and 20 5K runners, who successfully completed the race.
There are about 200 people live in Greater Des Moines Area. Community members are not only active in social or cultural activities but they are also very active in healthy activities. Beside running they regularly participate in competitive interstate football, volleyball, table tennis, racquetball  and tennis tournaments. Most of community members are informational technology and business professionals so it allows them to get involve in additional healthy activities after work and weekends.
“Nepali Des Moines Running team was started 4 years ago by one of our prominent community member Mr. Bikal Adhikari, when there was just handful runners. Due to his consistent motivation and support, now the group has 60 plus members subscribed to this running team. This group keep growing each year.” says Sanjay Shrestha, President of Iowa Nepalese association.

Most of the runners ran the course the first time. They have been working hard for over 2 months. “Race day is the celebration of all the hard work you have done during training and I am very proud of all the the runners. All the credit goes to the runners as they are the one pounding the road, I just try to motivate by putting together a training plan” says a the team coordinator Bikal Adhikari (from Duradanda, Lamjung). He has completed his 8th half marathons and 3 full marathons. He choose running as his primary sport since 2010.

Bhavesh Shrivastav (from Gaur, Rahutahat), who ran his first ever long run says “It was one of the best moment in my life, I had a great experience. I never thought that I could compete such a long run, but a great support, motivation and proper guidance from our seniors helped me to complete the race.  I was worried a lot in the beginning but after completing, I have a complete satisfaction and also very proud of myself”

We expect more runners will participate next year for this event, which is very exciting for our community members and others who hear about this running team.
