The interaction program “Understanding of Mental Health: How it is Affected by Disasters” on May 9, 2015, in Arlington, Virginia, organized by the Society of American-Nepalese Nurses (SANN) during Nurses Week was a grand success. The program focused on the psychological effects on Nepalese American immigrants of the devastating earthquake in Nepal. The participants overwhelmingly suggested to SANN to conduct more programs in coming days to increase awareness on understanding mental health and emphasized on the urgent need of such awareness programs in the affected areas in Nepal.

Dr. Maheshwor Baidya, an advisor of SANN, delivered a presentation on the “recent earthquake in Nepal and its effects on mental health.” Laura Ballard, an LCSW-Arlington County Mental Health Therapist, provided the audience available resources on mental health with minimum cost. Anshu Basnyat,LCPC, discussed “understanding Nepalese cultural concept & mental health” and compared those concepts with American culture. Bharati Devkota, LCPC, gave a presentation on “trauma and the mind/body connection” relating to the recent devastating earthquake and its impact on mental health and how one can cope with this over time.

Mr. Narayan Mainali, Deputy Chief of Mission of Nepal Embassy, Washington DC, acclaimed the program and expressed its importance during such a difficult time.

SANN would like to express sincere thanks to all the resource professionals for their impressive, informative and useful presentations. We like to extend our sincere thanks to the Nepalese Embassy and Mr. Mainali for honoring the invitation and his presence.

The program was chaired by Manju Sangraula and conducted by Dr. Kalpana Satyal. Our gratitude goes to all of those media friends. We would like to express its sincere thanks to the adviser Ms.Rita Tiwari for her advice on coordinating speakers.
